Hanuman Jayanti!

Happy Hanuman Jayanti

Today, on the auspicious full moon day (Purnima Tithi) of the Chaitra month, Hindus around the world celebrate Hanuman Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman. Devotees revere this beloved deity for his immense strength, unwavering devotion to Lord Rama, and selfless service.

The Birth of a Mighty Warrior

There are two main beliefs regarding Hanuman’s birthday. Many follow the tradition that he was born on Chaitra Purnima, which falls in April according to the Gregorian calendar. Others believe his birthday falls on the fourteenth day (Chaturdashi) in the dark fortnight of the Ashvin month. Regardless of the specific date, Hanuman Jayanti is a joyous occasion filled with devotion and celebration.

Worshipping Hanuman

Hanuman temples across India see a surge in devotees on this day. Special pujas (prayers) are offered, often at sunrise, as Hanuman is believed to have been born during that time. Devotees chant hymns, sing bhajans (devotional songs), and recite the Sunderkand, a revered section of the Ramayana that details Hanuman’s exploits. Offerings of prasad (blessed food) are a common sight, often including Hanuman’s favorite, laddus (a sweet dish made from gram flour and sugar).

Significance of Hanuman Jayanti

Hanuman Jayanti is more than just a birthday celebration. It’s a day to reflect on the qualities Hanuman embodies. His immense strength serves as a reminder to overcome challenges and obstacles. His unwavering devotion to Lord Rama teaches us the importance of dedication and loyalty. And his selfless service inspires us to put the needs of others before our own.

Celebrations Across India

While the core traditions remain the same throughout India, regional variations exist. In some parts of South India, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on a different date. Maharashtra and other regions might hold special processions or enactments from the Ramayana. The essence, however, remains constant – a day to honor Lord Hanuman and the values he represents.

A Day of Inspiration

Hanuman Jayanti is a reminder of the power of faith, devotion, and service. It’s a day to celebrate the qualities that make Hanuman a timeless figure, inspiring millions across generations. Let us celebrate this auspicious occasion by striving to embody the strength, devotion, and selfless service that Lord Hanuman is known for.
